Michigan’s State of the Arts

Michigan is home to world-renown artists and world-class works of art. You can see proof and rub shoulders with them — and the people who make them possible — at the 22nd Annual Governor’s Awards for Arts and Culture Gala.
Presented by ArtServe Michigan, the evening honors the people, organizations and businesses that make our home a most special place for the fine and performing arts and culture. The special evening is Thursday, Nov. 29, at the Detroit Institute of Arts.
“The Governor’s Awards for Arts & Culture embody the spirit of creativity and innovation that is Michigan’s legacy,” Michigan Governor Jennifer Granholm said. “The Awards are an opportunity to showcase how Michigan artists, arts educators, cultural organizations and their supporters foster the inventiveness and originality that is critical to Michigan. I congratulate everyone being honored and applaud you for your accomplishments and contributions to Michigan’s future.”
This year’s Governor’s Awards for Arts & Culture Gala will be unique in many ways. This year’s theme is “Reinvention.” The event will feature a new honoree recognition process, introduce the new “Guvvy” award design, and celebrate the re-opening of the restored DIA. Festivities begin at 6 p.m. with a reception with the governor. Dinner follows at 6:30 p.m. The Awards are at 8 p.m. with an afterglow at 9:30 p.m. The image above is “Fire Dance,” performed at the 2006 Great Works Gala Concert.
