Ann Arbor Shines with Move to LEDs

Ann Arbor is leading the way as the first U.S. city to be lit entirely by LEDs. Saving energy and reducing greenhouse gas emissions, LED holiday lights required only 20% of traditional power while reducing 70 tons of carbon dioxide. The next task will be conversion of more than 1,000 LED streetlights with all installation completed by 2009.
Inhabitat is reporting that at the project’s conclusion “city officials expect to see energy use for public lighting cut in half and a reduction of 2,425 tons CO2 annually.” Ann Arbor predicts a 50% savings on energy and maintenance — over $100,000 annually on the first 1,000 lights alone.
