Sonic Drive-In to Debut in Grand Rapids, Michigan

Sonic Drive-In - Grand Rapids, MichiganIs anyone as excited I am to know that Sonic — “America’s Drive-In” — will be making its way into Michigan this year?

After years of tortuously mouth-watering commercials, it’s official; Sonic is creeping slowly into Michigan via Grand Rapids.

The chain has built its reputation across the nation as a great place for family fun — complete with carhops on roller-skates, chilidogs and a bazillion kinds of fruity slushes. Now, our great state gets to be a part of the all-American action!

And, it’s all starting to make marketing sense. Sonic commercials have been featured here for what feels like forever, but there’s not a single drive-in within sight. I don’t know if it has been the whole snow factor + drive-in combo that has scared franchisees away, but heck! We’re in Michigan, we’re used to being out in the cold and we love food. I know I personally have wanted to jump in my car on several occasions and drive south until Sonic was in sight. Now, I will only have drive two hours.

So dearest Sonic: Your next move must be to head to the eastside of the state. If you do, I promise to consume endless amounts of Cheesy Tater Tots and Cherry Limeade.

I’m pumped about Sonic coming to the glove but my fast-food satisfaction will not be complete until I can feast on Hardee’s buscuits and gravy for breakfast in the D again!

Eric,

There is a Hardee’s at 9 mile and John R. Road in Hazel Park and one at 15 mile and Mound Road in Sterling Heights.

Oh my God I am sooo excited about sonic coming to Michigan finally. I do not live in Grand Rapids, I am about 2 hrs away myself. Hopefully we will get one closer to the Detroit area. Whenever I am south I go to sonic. I love it.

Wendy writes:

Has anyone heard about a Sonic coming to Flint? That’s what I heard.

i heard that there was one opening in the detroit metro area or is that a urban legend? at this point i would drive the two hours to go there and try every thing and im not a fast food type of person D— it all looks good.

They are opening a Sonic in Southgate next month. The construction is almost done. I thought this was well known.

ecedo writes:

Southgate? How did I miss that? I live 2 minutes from Southgate…With the new Fatburger in Southfield, several Hardees in town still and a Sonic locating a brief jog from my house my cholesterol is rising as I write.

Lauren, congrats on posting the story with the most comments so far on MLMT…and it’s a story about a fast-food restaurant. Who knew that’s the kind of story Michigan wants to hear about!

Dan writes:

The first Sonic will open in Southgate Michigan. Subsequent Sonics will be opening throughout the state in the next few years. The next one will be in the west metro suburbs. The other Sonics have not broke ground yet. Soon..
