Michigan Renewable Energy for Valentine’s Day

The Michigan Student Sustainability Coalition felt it was time to show our legislatures how much we love clean energy. So we’re sending special Valentine’s Day cards to our favorite representatives and senators to explain that we really would love to see a stronger commitment to renewable energy and energy efficiency. After all, with all the jobs it would create and greenhouse gas emissions that would be cut, we can save Michigan’s economy and solve this little climate crisis all at once!
We’re also holding a press conference on Valentine’s Day, February 14th at 10 a.m. inside the Capitol, when we will deliver cards to legislators.
The Valentine’s Day Card initiative is part of the Michigan Student Sustainability Coalition’s “Energy Future Campaign.” The campaign platform is for the Michigan State Government to enact an energy policy that includes:
1. A renewable energy portfolio standard (RPS) of at least 25% by 2025.
2. An energy efficiency (EE) standard requiring 2% energy efficiency increases in this state per year until 2015, with a commitment to the renegotiation of a stronger standard after 2015. Create clean energy programs that stimulate job growth in Michigan through energy conservation.
3. Integrated Resource Planning (IRP) of Energy Projects. All new energy projects should consider all costs, including public health and environmental costs.
4. No new coal-fired or nuclear power plants in Michigan. Coal and nuclear power are harmful to human health, bad for communities and an environmental disaster. Coal emissions are the leading cause of global warming.
We even made a website, www.cleanenergylove.com, where everyone can send a Valentine’s Day card to Michigan Congress.
