Speaking of the centennial celebration of the Ford Model T, Lawrence Tech and the U of M-Dearborn are two of five universities worldwide that Ford Motor Company has selected for a new competition called the Ford Model T University Challenge.
An international contest — which also includes undergrad and graduate participants from Aachen University in Germany; Art Center College of Design in California; and Deakin University in Australia; — the goal of each school in the competition is to design a 21st century vehicle that will recapture the attributes that made Henry Ford’s Model T the revolutionary automobile it was - simple, lightweight, practical, compelling and inexpensive.

On Monday, Detroit, Michigan, and the rest of the country kicked off the 2008 edition of National Transportation Week (NTW). Running from May 11 - 17, Detroit is the host city of this annual transportation industry hurrah for the second consecutive year.
Sure, NTW was a great success in Detroit in 2007, but this year’s celebration is extra-special because it also marks the start of “2008: Year of the Car,” a summer-long festival in Southeast Michigan designed to celebrate 100 years of General Motors and Ford’s Model T. More than 120 auto-themed activities are planned for the region through early October. [ Read more ]
Shiny new buildings are nice, but there’s something about old historic structures that makes them … well, special.
The state understands this and the importance of preserving our history, and, as such, recognizes and honors several preservation projects annually with a special accolade - the Governor’s Award for Historic Preservation.
With May designated as National Historic Preservation month, it was only fitting that Governor Jennifer Granholm recently announced the recipients of this special award. They will be honored at a ceremony in the state Capitol rotunda later this week. [ Read more ]
A conventional energy company is not the first business I would suspect of going green, so I was surprised to find out that DTE Energy is currently taking steps to do just that. On Tuesday, the energy giant announced plans to lessen its environmental footprint by converting its 800 diesel-fueled trucks and service vehicles to cleaner-burning biodiesel fuel. [ Read more ]
The 26th annual Downtown Hoedown hits Detroit this weekend, and - as in years past - this Hart Plaza Festival promises to deliver great national music acts, tasty treats and an all-around good time.
Back in March, MiLifeMiTimes’ Nikki Stephan wrote candidly about the event — dubbed as the nation’s largest free country music fest — even delving into the Hoedown’s history and how it was the launching pad for some of country music’s biggest stars. If you missed that post, you can check it out here. For Hoedown-specific information, an artist lineup and more, click here.
I was pleasantly surprised to see that the Motor City was recently ranked ninth on Careerbuilder.com’s Top 10 cities for college graduates list.
According to the site:
CBCampus.com and Apartments.com crunched some numbers and compiled a list of the best cities for recent college grads. They factored in entry-level job openings, rental prices for a 1 bedroom apartment, and a plenty of fellow young 20somethings.
Philadelphia ranked first, followed by Boston, New York, Phoenix, Chicago and Dallas-Fort Worth. Los Angeles and Houston came in seventh and eighth, and Detroit and Atlanta rounded out the list.
National Transportation Week is just around the corner, and you’d be hard-pressed to find an area with transit on the brain more than metro Detroit. There are plenty of events scheduled for this special week — which runs nationwide from May 11 - 18 — including “The Future of Transportation in Southeast Michigan”, a business breakfast in metro Detroit on Thursday, May 15.

Local Detroit director Qasim A. Basir partnered up with fellow colleagues in a bi-coastal effort, pulling together their resources to produce three videos in support of the Barack Obama campaign, all done completely through donations from friends.
Qasim had been thinking for several months about how he could help the Barack Obama Presidential Campaign. [ Read more ]
Detroit — or Michigan, for that matter — may not be known as the creative capital of the nation, but that doesn’t mean we don’t have loads of talented young people in our midst.
Case in point: Melissa and Jennifer Hui, WSU students and sisters from Bloomfield Hills, who recently partook in and brought home a first place win in the digital arts category of the Microsoft Imagine Cup U.S. finals in Los Angeles. [ Read more ]
In an effort to fight hunger in Southeastern Michigan, Gleaners Community Food Bank and DTE Energy have come up with a cool idea: the two organizations are collaborating on a food bank that will use buffer land surrounding some electric facilities to grow vegetables. The first garden is being prepared for planting at DTE’s Carter Substation in Auburn Hills. Gleaners has recruited students from Pontiac’s Kennedy Center to tend the garden, which will be 4,500 square feet. [ Read more ]
