It’s hard to believe that a cow’s stomach — or, more specifically, an enzyme in a cow’s stomach — is the key to turning corn plants into fuel, but Michigan State University scientists announced today that the enzyme that allows the mooing mammals to digest grasses and other plant fibers can actually be used to turn plant fibers into simple sugars, which can then be used to produce ethanol to power automobiles.
