Girl ScoutsCaught a story over on TreeHugger about a pair of Ann Arbor Girl Scouts concerned with “plantations cut from the rainforest home of orangutans.”

Downriver Sonic Opening Soon in Southgate, Michigan

Sonic Drive-In in MichiganWith the first West Michigan Sonic due later this year, a Southgate franchise hopes to bring joy to area residents by month’s end. Even better, contract terms require the proprietors to open multiple Michigan locations. 15 Sonic restaurants are planned for Wayne County; Canton is already in the works with Flat Rock, Taylor, Monroe and Livonia also proposed.

The News-Herald reports that the Cherry Limeade efforts will result in 2,000 new jobs. Applications for the first restaurant are available at TCF Bank in Southgate.

Zaccaro’s Market Welcomed in Midtown Detroit

Zaccaro\'s MarketThe long-awaited Zaccaro’s Market has now graced Midtown Detroit for a full week. The Woodward Ave. gourmet grocer adds a welcomed convenience to city residents once relying on the corner store or trips to the suburbs.

D-Tales has written a full review following a recent visit. Sure, the site admits, there are the inevitable kinks to work out. But the store “has loads and loads of potential.”

While some sections are still to be fully stocked, the author concludes “my first impression of Zaccaros’ Market was one of promise.” Read the analysis, visit the official MySpace and see the coverage from the Detroit News.

VeggiesWhile we’re on the subject of vegetarianism, if you live or work in Detroit and have yet to try out the beyond-delicious vegan meals of the Detroit Evolution Laboratory, I have three words for you: you’re missing out.

The brainchild of partners Angela Kasmala and Gregg Newsom, “the Lab,” as its owners affectionately call it, offers the people of Detroit one raw and one cooked meal from 11 a.m. - 2 p.m. every Thursday and Friday. With a repertoire of 70+ delicious creations — including the likes of raw pad thai, an awesome B.L.A.T. sandwich with sweet potato fries, and this week’s vegetable coconut curry over brown rice — meals at the Lab are $10 each and are well worth the price.
