Bike Ypsi Spring Ride and Festival

by Bradley Gula

April 21st, 2008 in Ann Arbor, Biking, Lifestyle, Outdoor

Bike YpsiThe Bike Ypsi Spring Ride and Festival will begin at Recreation Park Pavilion on Sunday, May 4. There’s a long ride of 30 miles, “not as long ride” at 15, and a community tour at 3-5 miles. When all the cycling concludes near noon, the festival will commence with a barbecue, bike rodeo and other fun activities.

From their website: “The Ypsilanti Bicycling Coalition (Bike Ypsi) is a group of local cyclists who like riding bikes and engaging in bike-related shenanigans.”

If you aren’t able to make it on the 4th, weekly rides begin each Sunday at 1 p.m. There’s also a Google Group for those looking for some bike-related banter. Learn more about all of Bike Ypsi’s efforts at bike.ypsi.org.

Northern Michigan Recreation Weather

April 7th, 2008 in Alpena, Biking, Lifestyle, Mackinaw, Mt. Pleasant, Northern Michigan, Outdoor, Swimming, Traverse City

Northern MichiganWhile the snow is (hopefully) over, the weather business continues to be imprecise. In Northern Michigan, “a difference in 50 miles of the storm track can mean feast or famine.” Luckily, a new blog is on the scene “to put into plain language” the always fickle forecasts.

Northern Michigan Recreation Weather translates the weather into something a little more useful. The site provides an easy-to-follow explanation for people looking to celebrate the outdoors. [ Read more ]

Detroit Tours on Foot or by Bike

by Bradley Gula

February 20th, 2008 in Biking, Detroit, Events, Lifestyle, Outdoor

Detroit toursInside Detroit “guides the curious” on its walking tours of the city. Visit places unknown, learn a little history and meet the “doormen, owners and regulars” along the way. Check out a list of upcoming events (many are free) or schedule a personalized outing for you and some friends.

For the Lance Armstrongs of the world, Detroit Bikes! provides a two-wheeled alternative for a new perspective. Stay healthy, meet others and help promote cycling as a means of transit. Tours help guests gain a better appreciation of Detroit, “whether they live in the city, were one time residents, or just lived through stories of the old neighborhood from parents.” Take a look at the schedule and find a new event each month — April visits the riverfront, and May cycles through Mexicantown.

Moab, British Columbia, Sedona, Fruita, Asheville, Durango. These are some of the destinations that come to mind as the premier North American mountain biking locales. Consider adding Michigan’s Upper Peninsula (U.P.) to that list as it’s progressively recognized as one of those great places to ride by those in-the-know. The Keweenaw Peninsula at the northern most tip of the state offers trails and terrain unlike anywhere else in the Great Lakes Region. [ Read more ]
