It’s a typical work day and you leave your house at the same time you do every day. You’re moseying along just fine on the highway, listening to your favorite talk radio show, when all of a sudden you are confronted by a sea of red brake lights. It doesn’t take long to figure out that you’re in a traffic jam, and you’re headed nowhere fast. [ Read more ]
The idea of modern mass transit is becoming a hot-topic in Michigan — better late than never for the state whose economy has been driven by getting people to, well, drive.
But with gas prices looking like they’re permanently above $3 a gallon, people are starting to clamor for some alternatives. The national trend is turning upward for mass transit and urban revitalization, so you should know about some major initiatives that could put new systems on our map. [ Read more ]
Travelers will soon move between Detroit Metro terminals on environmentally-friendly shuttle buses. Cheapflights reports of a recent announcement to bring two of Ford’s hydrogen-powered H2ICE buses to DTW. “The buses offer a clean, green method of transport and will help to reduce carbon emissions by 99.7 percent, compared to regular gasoline-powered vehicles.”
Powered by a pump in nearby Taylor, the vehicles are also in place at Ottawa’s Parliament Hill. In addition to the immediate environmental benefit, use of the new shuttles will also provide valuable real-world experience as research of alternative fuels continues. AutoblogGreen has a more detailed report.
The Detroit Transit Options for Growth Study (DTOGS) is recommending a light rail transit line along an eight-mile stretch on Woodward Avenue as the best choice for a regional rapid transit system in the Detroit area.
All last week, members of the public were invited to participate and comment on the proposed line. If you weren’t able to make it to one of the meetings, though, you can still make your voice heard. Here’s how. [ Read more ]
Looking for an easy way to plan a bus trip in Southeast Michigan? Look no further than SMART. The website of the regional transit system recently added the Google Transit Trip Planner to its repertoire of free services.
Southeast Michigan is one of 25 areas nationally that offers the mass transit-helper. It is the only bus service in Michigan to do so.
The Google Transit Trip Planner allows riders to enter the specifics of their trip - origin and destination addresses, and arrival or departure times - and then uses public transit schedules on Google to determine the most efficient itinerary.
Visit SMART on the Web for more information.
On June 5-6, young innovators will travel to Marshall, Michigan, for the 13th annual Supermileage. The event requires engineering students to create single-person, fuel-efficient vehicles powered by four-cycle engines. The cars then move through a designated course at the Eaton Corporation Proving Grounds and are judged on both miles per gallon and design.
An international competition, 35 college teams are expected from as far away as India, Qatar and Italy. Last year, an Indiana group hit 1,693 mpg at a similar challenge. In June, students will again have the opportunity “to set a world fuel economy record and increase public awareness.” Learn more at SAE International.
On Monday, February 25, a $170 million project will shut down a portion of I-75 in Detroit for nearly two years.
We Detroiters are no strangers to orange barrels, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t annoying to be driving along one day and realize that your normal route is no longer open and you’re now stuck trying to figure out another route to your destination.
A little tip if you ever drive on I-75 from Rosa Parks to Clark Street: prepare yourself now. [ Read more ]
Detroit Electric was an American icon in the early 1900s. The brand represented the most popular electric car in history from longest running electric car company. The vehicle was popular with customers like Thomas Edison, Charles Proteus Steinmetz, Henry Ford’s wife Clara and John D. Rockefeller, Jr. And while one hundred years ago Detroit Electric had a car that could travel 211 miles per charge, today’s technology can take us far beyond.
On February 7, U.S. electric car pioneer ZAP (Zero Air Pollution) and China Youngman Automotive Group announced the revival of the 100-year-old electric car brand in a joint venture. Detroit Electric officials look forward to bringing new vehicle technologies to market by 2009. [ Read more ]
Lake Orion resident Lynn Kuczajda found a love of trains in childhood. Always admiring old movies and dining cars, her fondest memories are of early train trips to Toronto.
So when it came time to plan her wedding, choosing a location was simple. Linens set and pictures taken, Valentine’s season was extra special with an “I do” aboard an Amtrak destined for Dearborn. A click-clack sound atop 1940s swing, Kuczajda and her new husband certainly made their wedding a “moving” one. [ Read more ]
