Michigan Tech Teams with ITC Holdings

by Nikki Stephan

April 22nd, 2008 in Careers, Companies, Houghton / Hancock, Jobs, Upper Peninsula

Michigan TechSenior students in the power engineering program at Michigan Technological University (Michigan Tech) have been propelling their careers forward thanks to a creative and unique partnership with engineers at ITC Holdings Corp. (ITC).

ITC is the largest independent electricity transmission company in the country. The company noticed that there is a lack of students choosing power engineering as a career, and Michigan Tech is one of the few universities in the country that offers an energy conversion and power systems program to engineering students. That’s why ITC has supported the growth of students entering the Senior Design Program and has donated a total of $42,750 in the past three years. [ Read more ]

Upper Peninsula T-Shirts and More at Yooper Steez

by Bradley Gula

February 22nd, 2008 in Entertainment, Escanaba, Fashion, Houghton / Hancock, Lifestyle, Marquette, Sault Ste. Marie, Upper Peninsula

Yooper SteezI was drawn in by the Ugliest Michigan Map Ever, but quickly found Yooper Steez (style with ease) a resource of all things U.P. “To represent Yoopers across the globe and show pride in Michigan’s great Upper Peninsula,” there’s the wonderfully simplistic t-shirts and “a pretty sweet blog.” Recent topics include a love of Belleville, Illinois, the U.P. 200 and a geographical breakdown.

In its few short weeks, Yooper Steez is already looking to give back. The group has set up a scholarship fund for an Upper Peninsula student with the perfect combination of “ambassion,” creativity and Yooper Pride. Check it out!

Where to Eat in the Upper Peninsula

by Bradley Gula

February 18th, 2008 in Dining, Drink, Eateries, Escanaba, Food, Houghton / Hancock, Lifestyle, Marquette, Sault Ste. Marie, Upper Peninsula

PastyI mentioned Mother’s Kitchen the other day, but special attention is in order for its amazing guide on where to eat in the U.P. Spending seven years in Houghton as both a Michigan Tech undergrad and graduate student, “Mom” pinpoints Finnish specialties, a good microbrewery and the top burger north of the Mackinac. You might be familiar with the pasty, but did you know that the “best Yooper bar snack around” is the pickled egg?

Hunts’ Guide has more Upper Peninsula specialties while Exploring the North lists five pages of U.P. food and lodging. Finally, be sure to take a look at this Chowhound thread of must-eat joints from Pictured Rocks to Tahquamenon Falls.

by Bradley Gula

February 8th, 2008 in Destinations, Entertainment, Houghton / Hancock, Lifestyle, Literature, Outdoor, Travel, Upper Peninsula

Copper mines“A Traveler’s Guide to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and Northern Wisconsin,” Exploring the North visits The Ghost Towns of the Keweenaw Peninsula in what was once the source of the world’s copper. Today, many old mines and nearby homes are left vacant but remain a part of Michigan history.

Exploring the North displays the most popular landmarks from an era past. With its stories and photos, the site maps out locations to help plan a Copper Country Road Trip. After your trip, pick up “A Ghostly Road Tour Of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula” with “haunted lighthouses, haunted houses and haunted theaters” across the U.P.
